The Life of Will/ie/iam Womack, from age 8

Will - William Womack
Father - John Womack
Mother - Matilda Brown (Mc tilda)
Records for marriage to John Womack not found. John Womack later married Nellie Montague Womack and they settled in Marshall, Harrison, Texas by 1880, shown to be married by 1871 and Will Womack was born in or about 1893, give or take.
According to familysearch.org Will(iam) Womack was married by 1916 to Ella Robertson in Marshall, McLennan, Texas on December 31st. By 1917 he was drafted. The WWI Draft Registration shows that he was "married with children". I assuming that the child was Ella's son Curly James Fields as shown in the 1920 Census. Record does not show child born between the two of them.

1900 Census

age 16, 1884
Annie Walker, daughter, age 2
Anna Darden, niece, age 6
Willie Womack,nephew, age 8
Nathan Womack, nephew, age 4

Just a note - Josephine/Josie Walker was married to Walter Womack, the son of Henry Womack. Henry Womack was born to John Womack and Nellie Montague Womack.

1920 Census
Will Womack, head
age 27, 1893
Father - Texas
Mother - Texas
Ella Robertson Womack, wife, age 28
Curly J. Fields, stepson, age 8
John Benson, roomer, age 24
East Border Street
Just a note - I am assuming that Will Womack and Ella Robertson Womack moved to Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri because Curly James Fields, Ella's son was stationed there.
1930 Census
Will Womack, head
age 36, 1894
Ella Robertson Womack, wife, age 36

Jarboe/w Street

1940 Census
Will Womack, head
age 44, 1896
Ella Robertson Womack, wife, age 45
Madison Avenue

I am unclear on why Will(iam) Womack moved to Houston, Harris, Texas. His death certificate shows that he was living there at the time of his death and that he was divorced.

Keeping track...can be a task by itself

I went through the familysearch.com and searched for all of the African Americans with the last name Womack, my search options were: 'Wom*', United States, Texas, Marshall Texas this was to find any Womack that was born or died in Marshall, Texas during a certain time period. I will use this as a guide during my research. I found myself going and forth when doing my research, especially when names come up and they look familiar. I type and copied all the 'Womack' names and put them in a binder. I colored coded them by male and female and then by the month and year born. This tool may help some of you that may be researching your family history. The more I discover, I will add them to my list. In fact, there were more on ancestry.com. After taking listing them, I went back to see what I could find on that person and made note and inserted the notes behind that person. This also tells me how and if they are related to my family.

Octavia/ie Womack Roland - Daughter of John Womack

This Census show that there was a ?baby girl born in that year. The name is not list. Elize/a Montague Walton is Nellie's (Montague Womack) sister. Octavia/ie's death certificate shows that "John Womack" and Eliza/e Walton is Octavia/ie's parents. It thought that Octavia/ie is the unnamed child on this Census. Perhaps, just perhaps John Womack and Nellie raised Octavia/ie as their child.

In search of John Womack - Clue#7 - his wife Nellie

Nellie Montague Womack – Timeline

I am searching for John Womack, in order to do that I had to break down his in-home family members to understand him more. Census shows that John Womack, my Great, Great Grandfather married Nellie Montague in 1871. You have to be careful not to miss the reference. It is very easy to overlook a name, especially if you have been searching for a long time. Researching Nellie Montague Womack tells me that John Womack was married in 1871. I found a 1860 slave schedule with him on it at the age of 5 years of age, Texas (Slave owner, John F. Womack) which means he should have been b. about 1854. John Womack died in 1924. I am still waiting to hear from the Marshall, Texas Public Library. I figure the delay is because of the holidays.

1871, marriage - 1860, slave schedule = 17 years of age.

Nellie Montague Womack, Father – Frank Montague/Mother – Hannah ?
,information gathered according to Nellie's death certificate

1880 Census – 1856 (24) (John 1845 at the age of 35)

The census shows that she was b. in Texas and that she was a Housekeeper.

Father – Mississippi

Mother – Mississippi

Married to John Womack, recorded 1871 at 15 years of age

Hannah – 1872 Father – Georgia Mother – Texas, had her at 16 years of age

Levi – 1875 Father – Georgia Mother – Texas, had him at 19 years of age

Henry – 1878 Father- Georgia Mother – Texas, had him at 22 years of age

James – 1879 Father – Georgia Mother – Texas, had him at 23 years of age

Note - "all persons will be included in the Enumeration who were living on the 1st day of June 1880 (Census completed June 14th, 1880). Children born since June 1st, 1880 will be omitted. Family members who have died since June 1st, 1880 will be included."

1900 Census – 1845 (55) (John 1835 at the age of 65)

Father – Georgia

Mother – Georgia

Married to John Womack

Hanah – 1876 Father – Mississippi Mother – Mississippi, had her at 31 years of age

Eliza/Elize – 1883 Father – Mississippi Mother – Mississippi, had her at 38 years of age

Ras – 1884 Father – Mississippi Mother – Mississippi, had her at 37 years of age

Maggie – 1887 Father – Mississippi Mother – Mississippi, had her at 42 years of age

Octavia/Octavey – 1891 Father – Mississippi Mother – Mississippi, had her at 56 years of age

1920 Census – 1851 (69) (John Womack 1850 at the age of 70)

Father – North Carolina

Mother – Mississippi

Married to John Womack/widowed by now (John Womack died in 1924)

The only child that was left in the home is Octavia. Though the 1910 Census is missing, the age difference is by 1 year, she should be around 29 years of age. By now Octavia Womack Roland is married to John H. Roland (b 1880 Father – Texas Mother – Texas) and two children are shown to live in the house that is listed as Nellie’s (Montague Womack) grandsons. Wilbert Womack b 1901 and Nathan Roland b 1912. Nellie’s death certificate shows that she was born in 1854 and died in 1939, which made her 85 years of age. I did not see any slave schedules for Nellie.

Nellie died in 1939.

Prison Records and Search

I had to unfortunately begin locating my biological Father in the prison system. Once I wrote the prison it did not take long. They sent a great deal of information, no questions ask. I also have a link to a list of prisons in the United States (by the state).

...still trying to gather my thoughts

In search of John Womack - Marshall, Texas #2 Clue

So, in the mean time I searched and searched some more for my Great, Great Grandfather John Womack. Unfortunately, to find this 1920 Census I had to tweak the 'search' just a little. On this 1920 Census, I learned a few more things:

Reference back to this post:

 John Womack - Post, update

1920 Census, found.

The 1900 Census showed him as being b 1835 (65 years of age), now it shows him being b 1850
(7- years of age), which is a fifteen year difference. The 1900 Census also showed him and Nellie Montague being married for twenty-nine years, which would have made him marry at the age of 6. We all now this is a piece of the puzzle not fitting.

Now they live on Frog Town Street, still renting their home (dwelling as they called it)

Same b place, Mississippi

Father b place the same, Mississippi

Mother b place changed from Mississippi to North Carolina

The only child living in the home is Octavia (Womack) Roland, married to John H. Roland.

Now a laborer, brick mason

Eliza 'Liza' (b 1883), his daughter according to the 1900 Census is married to Sol Walter is listed on this 1920 Census.

One more step closer to finding my Womack/Payne/Lewis roots.

In search of John Womack - Marshall, Texas

This BLOG entry is the beginning of my family tree search (Womack of Marshall, Texas). I have done a big portion of my family tree search but because I was ask a number of times that same question; "where did you start?", I decided to begin again showing step by step - how to's - links to sites - letter of request  and - results. I am starting with my Great, Great Grandfather John Womack b abt 1835. As we know at great deal of 1890 Census was destroyed. We also know that Census Records are the foundation for building out family trees. As you can see below that my Great, Great Grandfather's birth parents were supposedly from Mississippi, but sometimes this is not always the case. Unfortunately, there were two negro John Womacks in that time period that resided in Marshall, Texas and he too was supposedly born in Mississippi. Because I don't have a whole lot of information on my Great, Great Grandfather I have to start with the 1900 Census.

The information I learned from this 1900 Census:

Lived on East Border Street
The term 'black'
b March 1835
Married 29 years, 1900 - 29 = 1871
(To Nellie Montague)
Father b Mississippi
Mother b Mississippi
He was b Mississippi
read/write, no
Rented, house
I also learned that there were other Womacks on this Census

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was not a whole lot to learn on the death certificate but the year of his death:
I have researched the letters on his headstone to see what kind of organization he was in but it was a dead end. I will continue to research that. This is something that I did not figure during the first search. It is kind of on the back burner as far as research is concern (I will keep you updated).
So, the beginning of search is an email to the Marshall Public Library to see if they can find any information on when and where he was born. In the mean time I will continue to do research. I mentioned in other BLOG post that sometimes it take a couple of request before getting a reply, and that's okay.
