School Records - Family Tree Search
Please note, from 1862 all schools had to keep records and references to individual students can be found in those records. The following points should help you with you school record search:
Remember most site only have data that was researched and recorded and other information had to be submitted to the site. I was not successful in many, many cases of my search when it came to finding school records for African Americans. The only ones that I was able to find on sites like ancestry.com were ones that a member of my family had submitted of the later generations. However, I have talked to other African Americans that were more successful then myself. I guess it is safe to say, it depends on the interest in each individual family. Some of the information may not be submitted to the sites for view for many reasons, one being that they may not have ever thought to do so. Try researching the school census on one of the available sites. In the Tarrant County area, I have just walked into the school administrative office and requested records, paid on the spot and waited. The only thing that I was asked was "what the records would be used for".
Public School Locator, this may help you locate the school in which you want to request a record. I had done a lot of mail request. Sometime, I would have to send a couple before I would get a reply.
Look for withdrawal forms, enrollments forms and report cards (drawers, file cabinets, asking).
Search the newspaper for sports events.
