My experience with the Tarrant County Library was the reply when I would ask about African American Family Tree Research. Surely, I was guided down the long aisle of archived file boxes and books to look through as I stood by and watched those of the Caucasian race find clue after clue after clue. I thought, what the heck is wrong with this picture. I went to the Library for one solid year, day in and day out. I could count on my one hand the amount of us'ses (black folk) that visited the Genealogy Department. So, keep in mind when you visit your public library to put on your jogging clothes because you will have to sit and dig.
I wish you a great deal of luck with your search. Finding a piece of that history puzzle is the most greatest feeling I had ever had next to being Blessed with five more pieces of our family tree puzzle (my children)!
Though, I reside in Texas (Tarrant County) I wrote to many other Libraries for information. Sometimes I would have to write reminders but I would eventually get the information requested. Here is a list of Public Libraries by the state.
